WORLD TOURISM DAY
Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change – UNWTO Climate Solutions Initiative
Lima, Peru - 26 September 2008
This year’s official World Tourism Day (WTD) celebrations are hosted by Peru in Lima with a Think Tank on “Tourism - Responding to the Challenge of Climate Change” and mirrored in UNWTO Member States around the world. UNWTO will also announce the new portal ClimateSolutions.travel for the industry to register good practice commitment.
The Think Tank will:
- Consider global thinking on Tourism and Climate Change and its local applications.
- Explore implementation in the framework of UNWTO’s Davos Declaration Process and the evolving UNFCCC actions.
- Identify practical solutions for the sector.
ClimateSolutions.travel aims to become the central gateway for tourism stakeholders and the UN system for information on available solutions to help the tourism sector respond to climate change and, in a collaborative effort, to achieve Climate Neutral Tourism. Participants will share and learn about available Climate Solutions and access Climate Intelligence resources such as Documents Library, RSS feeds, useful web site links and a Climate Solutions Wiki. This Portal is developed with the support of UNWTO partner Microsoft.
UNWTO encourages tourism stakeholders to:
- adapt tourism policies, commerce and destinations;
- mitigate greenhouse gas;
- apply existing and new technologies particularly for energy efficiency; and
- encourage financial resources particularly for developing states
